East Cree Oral Communication Certificate

The East Cree Oral Communication Certificate offers a structured, progressive learning experience designed to develop oral proficiency in the Cree language. This program is suitable for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Participants who have no prior knowledge of Cree and wish to build their ability to communicate effectively in various contexts, from everyday conversations to more formal interactions. Each level builds upon the previous one, focusing on speaking and listening skills while also introducing Participants to Cree cultural norms and values that shape language use. By the end of the program, Participants will be able to engage confidently in spoken Cree across a range of topics and situations.

    8 weeks of instruction with 4 hours of class time per week for a total of 32 hours each level.

Program-Learning Objectives

  • Develop fundamental speaking and listening skills in East Cree.
  • Gain confidence in using Cree in practical, everyday conversations.
  • Understand and apply Cree cultural norms and values in oral communication.
  • Build vocabulary and grammatical knowledge progressively across levels.
  • Enhance pronunciation and fluency through practice and repetition.

Certificate Components

  • Interactive Learning: Classroom instruction focusing on real-world communication, including role-playing, dialogues, and interactive exercises.
  • Cultural Workshops: Learners will participate in workshops led by Cree Elders and cultural experts, linking language with traditions, songs, and stories.
  • Language Labs: Access to immersive language labs, where learners can practice speaking and listening to native Cree speakers.
  • Regular Feedback: Continuous assessments, oral presentations, and feedback from instructors to guide progress.

  • Indigenous learners, who seek to reconnect with their heritage, preserve the Cree language, or improve their communication within Cree communities.
  • Non-Indigenous learners who are interested in learning the Cree language for personal or professional reasons.

    Participants are introduced to basic Cree vocabulary and simple sentence structures. Emphasis is placed on mastering greetings, introducing oneself, and using common phrases in everyday contexts. Basic listening and speaking exercises help build initial confidence.

  • 010-025-EE

    Building on foundational skills, Participants expand their vocabulary and learn to construct more complex sentences. They practice engaging in simple conversations about family, weather, and daily activities, with increased focus on pronunciation and comprehension.

  • 010-026-EE

    At this stage, Participants begin to engage in more meaningful conversations and learn how to express preferences, ask questions, and provide simple descriptions. Listening exercises introduce more varied speech patterns and vocabulary.

  • 010-027-EE

    Participants develop greater fluency and comprehension by practicing conversational exchanges in a variety of social settings. More complex sentence structures, storytelling, and culturally relevant phrases are introduced to improve listening and speaking proficiency.

  • 010-028-EE

    This level emphasizes spontaneous conversation and developing the ability to express opinions, emotions, and abstract ideas. Participants engage in role-playing activities and discussions on cultural and community topics to refine their conversational abilities.

    In the final level, Participants achieve fluency and confidence in oral communication. They engage in extended dialogues, present information on complex topics, and participate in discussions that require a deeper understanding of Cree cultural values and protocols.
