Effective Writing for Business Beginners

This course is designed to enhance written communication skills for administrative and business personnel with a focus on workplace emails and short reports. Participants will develop clarity, conciseness, and a professional tone for writing in a variety of contexts. The course is highly interactive and customized to meet the needs of the participants.

Through practical exercises and local examples, learners will refine their ability to write with confidence and effectiveness in professional settings.

Meet our Instructors

  • Anne Roop, M.Sc.Ed. TESOL, B.Sc.

    Anne Roop is an experienced educator with over 25 years in adult education, specializing in English language instruction, professional communication, and curriculum development. She has taught and designed courses for diverse learners including healthcare professionals, international students, college professors, and Indigenous communities.

    Anne’s diverse teaching profile features extensive experience with McGill University’s Written English for Workplace Communication certificate program, which focuses on professional and business writing. Her recent work involves developing and instructing Essential Communication Skills for STEM, a McGill University course designed in partnership with First Nations communities in Quebec, including Chisasibi.

    Anne holds a Master’s Degree in Education and is passionate about lifelong learning with an engaging and supportive approach to teaching.

  • Dean Garlick, M.A.Ed., B.A.

    Dean Garlick has been an adult educator for over twenty-five years. He specializes in teaching English language, professional communication, academic preparation, and creative writing. He has taught a diverse array of clientele, including international students, engineers, healthcare workers, and recent immigrants to Canada.

    He designed the course, English for Technologists, for EFREI Engineering students at Concordia University. More recently, he developed and taught Basic Concepts in Math & Science, the initial Communications course for the Certificate in STEM Foundations, a program created in partnership with McGill University and Chisasibi Cree Nation. He currently teaches Creative Nonfiction Writing through McGill University.

    Dean holds a Master’s Degree in Second Language Education. He is also a fiction writer and photographer, who hopes to use his creative spirit to elevate his students’ learning experience.
