  • Planning and Career Education

    Planning and Career Education is a department that supports students with career development and job searches, including full-time, part-time, and summer, as well as work-integrated learning positions. Student assistance is provided through individual advising, workshops, organized career fairs, and a job posting service. At Eeyou Istchee College of Science and Technology, the emphasis will be on gaining experience so that  students are engaged in career planning and development activities from their first semester. Whether a student seeks to develop or refine interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership abilities, or test entrepreneurial potential, our staff work closely with students to identify and pursue opportunities for growth.

    Our services include the following:

    • Counselling.
    • Career Fairs.
    • Workshops.
    • Internship Placement.
    • Job board.

    • Many college students may feel uncertain about their educational and professional futures. Our career advisor is available to provide support and guidance in navigating these uncertainties. The advisor offers a confidential space to discuss thoughts, ideas, feelings, and concerns about the future. They assist with the following:

      • Help students understand and process their thoughts and emotions regarding their career paths.
      • Conduct assessments to identify students’ strengths, interests, values, and motivations.
      • Offer access to a variety of career-related resources, including information about industries, job trends, and career development tools.
      • Work collaboratively with students to create personalized career plans with achievable goals.
      • Provide individualized guidance and coaching tailored to students’ unique needs and aspirations.
      • Assist students explore different career directions and develop strategies to pursue their chosen paths.
      • Provide insight into local job markets, industries, and employment opportunities relevant to students’ career interests.
      • Offer support and guidance to help students make informed decisions about their educational and professional pathways.

    • We know that valuable opportunities extend beyond traditional job postings. That’s why we will facilitate connections between students and the workforce, employers, and alumni through career fairs and networking events. These gatherings provide students with excellent opportunities for students to engage with representatives from various industries, both within and outside the James Bay communities.

    • In addition to advising, we will offer career exploration programs, speaker events, and workshops to support students begin their career exploration and planning. Examples of workshops include C.V. writing, interviewing techniques, job search and application, and more. These workshops are designed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge needed to effectively and confidently navigate the job market.

    • A work-integrated learning placement is a field experience within a semester designed to give students practical experience in a specific field. We will advocate for fair compensation for students’ productive work and encourage employers to offer payment to interns. As part of our commitment to ethical hiring practices, we will not post unpaid internships/opportunities unless the organization is a non-profit entity. However, we may consider posting unpaid internships for NGOs/NPOs, with clear indication of their unpaid status. Our approach aligns with the ethical recruitment guidelines outlined in the Canadian Association of Career Educators & Employers (CACEE) Statement on Unpaid Internship.

    • A virtual job board will be provided for employers to post job openings, providing a convenient platform for students to explore employment opportunities. This tool serves as a valuable resource for students seeking employment opportunities within their field of interest.
