Reading and Writing East Cree Syllabics Certificate
The Certificate in East Cree Syllabics offers a structured, progressive learning experience designed to develop proficiency in reading and writing Cree using syllabics. This program is intended for Cree Participants who wish to master Cree syllabics and enhance their literacy skills across a range of contexts. Each level builds upon the previous one, focusing on developing the ability to decode, read, and write in Cree syllabics while incorporating knowledge of Cree cultural norms and values. By the end of the program, Participants will be able to confidently read and write in syllabics, contributing to the preservation and revitalization of the Cree language.

Each level consists of 6 weeks of instruction with 6 hours of class time per week, supplemented by cultural immersion sessions and self-study. -

Participants are introduced to the basic Cree syllabary, learning the core symbols and their sounds. They practice recognizing, reading, and writing simple words and phrases in syllabics.

Building on the basics, Participants begin to read and write short sentences in syllabics. Emphasis is placed on developing fluency with consonant-vowel combinations and understanding basic syllabic patterns.

At this stage, Participants work with longer texts and develop their ability to read and write complete sentences and short paragraphs. They explore variations in syllabic structure and improve their reading comprehension.

Participants focus on enhancing reading and writing skills by engaging with more complex texts. They develop accuracy in translating between syllabics and roman orthography, while also exploring culturally relevant stories and materials.

This level introduces more advanced concepts, including grammar, syntax, and idiomatic expressions in syllabics. Participants practice reading and composing longer texts, refining their writing and comprehension abilities.

In the final level, Participants demonstrate proficiency in reading and writing in syllabics. They engage with a variety of authentic texts, compose complex written works, and apply their knowledge in diverse contexts.
